Ferntree Gully, Round 5 – Seniors Match Report
By Clyde Cobra on May 17th, 2012
SENIORS
Ferntree Gully 14.19.103
Canterbury 10.14.74
Canterbury hit the road to a bright but frosty Ferntree Gully, looking to chalk up their second win of the season. It was a slow start though for the Cobras, with 13 scoring shots to the Eagles in the first quarter, which without their inaccurate kicking, could have put the match beyond reach early on. Joel Harding put in a solid shift in the first quarter, earning the hard ball.
The second quarter was evenly balanced, with 3 goals per team, including a fantastic weaving run from Cam McCasker finishing in a major.
The Cobras had the chance to fight back to level terms in the third quarter, but it was their inaccurate kicking this time around (4 goals 7 points) that let them down. Without key forwards Brett Johnson and Brent Isles, the Cobras finished the game with only one multiple goalkicker, and struggled for a forward focus. Rohan Walmsley dominated in the midfield.
In the last quarter the Cobras couldn’t quite pin back the Eagles, despite the strongest efforts from Richard Porter, and excellent forward pressure and goals from newcomer Cameron Mason.
Goal Kickers: C. Mason 2, R. Gates, J. Gillen, M. Cassidy, J. Rowe, T. Gread, C. Aligizakis, C. McCasker, M. Augustinus.
Best Players: C. Mason, B. Peel, C. McCasker, S. Hanrahan, M. Cassidy, J. Rowe.
Ferntree Gully, Round 5 – Reserves Match Report

RESERVES
Ferntree Gully 7.6.48
Canterbury 12.11.83
An excellent 5-goal first quarter set up Canterbury’s first ever win against Ferntree Gully, with this quarter’s haul proving the winning margin at the end of the day.
A solid back six led by Andrew Mack and Dave Dapiran kept the Eagles scoreless into the first break, and enabled the Cobras to attack through the midfield, with Lachy Giles running all day through the middle. The Burson brothers (working in tandem around the ground) provided first use of the ball, with excellent run from behind all match from all lines.
Up forward, Jeremy Price provided a focal point up forward and encouraged the Cobras to be more direct. Matt Auld’s return from in jury added spark up forward, while Justin Perillo’s growing confidence is also promising for the club.
Coach Zaharopoulos said of the match:
I’m extremely happy with the four quarter effort. We had the discipline to play man on man all day.
The Cobras now travel to Surrey Park looking to lock in another important win.

131 Seconds With… Simon Beardall
By Clyde Cobra on May 4th, 2012
The 131 Seconds With… interview series profiles Canterbury Cobra members and players, as the latest part of our 131-year club history.
Name? Simon Beardall.
Number? 28.
First club you played at/were member of? Canterbury Junior Football Club.
Favourite Position? Half-Forward Flank.
If you could swap one thing with another Canterbury player or member, what would it be? I’m gonna be greedy here, but Jake’s kicking ability, Bubba’s “average” rig, Ana’s leg speed and BGA’s marking/spoiling. I’d then nominate for the next AFL national draft!
Favourite sporting moment (personal or from a player/team you support)? Making and playing in the Grand Final with Canterbury in the SFL a few years ago. A few of the older boys understand that we still have some unfinished business to attend to.
Hidden talent off the pitch? I can cook a mean salmon steak/fillet on the BBQ. It has been known to impress the fillies…
Best piece of advice you’ve never forgotten? Precious few are born with it, even fewer know what to do with it.
Your favourite thing about the Canterbury Cobras Football Club? The vibe amongst the playing group and our ability to take the mickey out of each other.

Favourite sporting moment (personal or from a player/team you support)? Michael Bevan’s last ball boundary to beat the West Indies.
Hidden talent off the pitch? I play the piano.
Best piece of advice you’ve never forgotten? If it is to be, it is up to me.
Your favourite thing about the Canterbury Cobras Football Club? Everyone plays purely because they love playing footy, and I love the mateship. It’s a good place to be around.
The President’s Round 3 Update
By Clyde Cobra on May 1st, 2012
After only 3 rounds we have had a number of highlights to date:
- Our new players are settling into the club well.
- Past players have been regulars to our games, and are again an important part of our club in becoming player sponsors.
- New social members are signed up for the season.
- Social functions have been successful with our Hawaii 5-0 night & Ladies Day Luncheon.
- Beer stein and player auctions have been well supported.
- The rooms are looking great with honour boards updated, our memorabilia on display, and sponsored player photos are up.
There is plenty more to look forward to throughout the year, so check out our social calendar here on the website and lock in the dates.
The vibe around the club is one of anticipation and excitement. Beating Kilsyth by 49 points was the highlight of the year so far. Whilst falling narrowly short in out other 2 games against Park Orchards and Forest Hill, the signs are there and I believe we have been giving 100% in every game.
Injuries to key players Brett Johnson, Riley McDonald and James Lomax has restricted our progress, however these guys aren’t far away and will only strengthen our senior side in the coming weeks.
We could’ve easily dropped our heads and thought that 1-2 is a bad start; the reality is we have had a solid start and will only get better. The bye this week will see us all re-group on and off the field, and hit the ground running the following week against Ferntree Gully away.
Special thanks to all of our sponsors (new and existing) and past players for embracing our club and being part of a new era of success.
Go Cobras!
