Silvan, Round 8 – Match Reports
SENIORS
Canterbury 8.6.54
Silvan 18.14.122
The Cobras hosted Silvan on a date where the 1972 Premiership team gathered, to celebrate the 40 year anniversary of the flag. Some of the past players passed on some of their wisdom of what makes a winning team before the game, hoping to inspire a victory pivotal in the 2012 season.
It seemed to have an impact in the first quarter, as the Cobras started brighter than in previous weeks, and were well in the game at quarter time.
Unfortunately due to the combination of a large number of missing personnel (especially in key positions), and a more disciplined and skilful display across the four quarters from Silvan, the opposition pulled away throughout the match and ran away comfortable winners.
Positives from the day were limited, but it was great to have Brent Isles back up forward, kicking 2 goals from very limited opportunities. Tom Pearce and Sam Murphy played well in defence, with the latter having an extremely tough job to do on a very talented full forward with plenty of supply.
On a serious note we wish Tim Beare all the best in his recovery, after he was knocked out in a fair footballing incident without any malice from the Silvan player.
Goal Kickers: B. Isles 2, A. Baker 2, J. Price, A. Mock, C. McCasker, M. Augustinus.
Best Players: T. Pearce, S. Murphy, R. Porter, T. Beare, M. Pollett, B. Peel.
RESERVES
Canterbury 6.22.58
Silvan 8.7.55
Despite doing their best to lose the game all day through very poor goal kicking, the Cobras’ will to win proved too strong in the end, grinding out a 3-point win.
The Cobras had the best of the inside 50s throughout the match, but failed to capitalise on the scoreboard. Scott Burson did well to supply key midfielders Clayton Skate and Craig Lashbrook throughout the day, while Heath Dent kept things tight at the back, with an assured defensive display.
The game should have been over by three quarter time, but with Canterbury kicking one goal, eight behinds in the third, they were left with hard work to do in the last.
Enter key forward Justin Perillo, who helped the Cobras hold on to record their third win. Despite a mixed bag of results this season, the Cobra reserves are only a win and percentage off fourth position.
Goal Kickers: J. Perillo 3, D. Dapiran, S. Kelly, D. Gates.
Best Players: H. Dent, C. Lashbrook, C. Skate, J. Perillo, C. Aligizakis, S. Burson.
