Nunawading, Round 9 – Match Reports
SENIORS
Nunawading 16.17.113
Canterbury 12.12.84
Canterbury came up against a well-drilled Nunawading side, who were playing at home which provided a distinct advantage, moreso than most away trips this season.
With some key position players still sidelined, the opposition’s large number of mobile tall players hurt the Cobras in the first half, with their good ball movement around the ground. This was despite the best efforts of Richard Porter who repeatedly got his hands on the ball in the ruck.
The changes to the Cobras midfield rotation and structure were starting to pay dividends, though Nunawading were a little tougher around the stoppages, and found themselves with more of the ball. The exceptions to this general trend were Levi King and Brendan Allen, who were tough in the clinches.
Heading into the last quarter well behind on the scoreboard, the Cobras threw caution to the wind and piled on 8 goals to show great spirit, with Matty Augustinus having a field day up forward, kicking goals and winding up the opposition.
Under heavy pressure all day due to the small ground, the Cobra backs of MacDonald, Hanrahan and the returning James Lomax did a great job.
Goal Kickers: M. Augustinus 5, A. Baker 2, J. Rowe, T. Gread, D. Carroll, L. King, B. Isles.
Best Players: M. Augustinus, R. Porter, L. King, J. Lomax, A. MacDonald, S. Hanrahan.
RESERVES
Nunawading 20.13.133
Canterbury 7.10.52
The Cobra reserves started positively against Nunawading, but inefficiency in front of goal (kicking 2 goals 5 points) allowed the opposition to stick their noses in front. Leading up to half time though, the Cobras weren’t out of the game, and went in to the main break just three goals down.
The damage was done in the third quarter, with the Cobras getting overrun, and eight goals to one putting the game out of reach. In the last quarter Nunawading overrun the tired legs in the Cobra camp.
It was a game with not too many positives; though three goals from Marty Kocurek, a stand out performance from Shaun Kelly, and Andrew Mack putting in a serviceable shift were some highlights. David Gates was also his consistent self.
Goal Kickers: M. Kocurek 3, C. Aligizakis 2, J. Price, C. Skate.
Best Players: S. Kelly, D. Gates, T. Finnin, M. Kocurek, S. Burson, C. Aligizakis.
